Understanding HBOT
Educational guidance for those exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy: what it is, how it works, and what to expect.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a rapidly growing field, but it can be difficult to navigate without independent guidance. This page is designed to answer the most common questions we hear from clients, whether you're a patient, a healthcare professional, an athlete, or a business exploring HBOT.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure or high-concentration oxygen inside a pressurised chamber. The increased atmospheric pressure allows oxygen to dissolve into the bloodstream at significantly higher levels than normal breathing allows.
This elevated oxygen saturation is understood to support a range of physiological processes. The specific effects and their relevance to any individual are clinical questions, best discussed with a qualified practitioner at a reputable HBOT facility.
HBOT is used across a wide spectrum of applications: from clinically indicated medical treatments to performance recovery, wellness optimisation, and longevity protocols.
Hard Shell vs. Soft Shell Chambers
Hard Shell (High-Pressure) Chambers
Operate at 1.5 ATA and above. Used in clinical and medical settings for conditions such as wound healing, decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and radiation injury. Require medical-grade oxygen and trained supervision.
Soft Shell (Mild Hyperbaric) Chambers
Typically operate between 1.3–1.5 ATA using filtered ambient air or low-flow oxygen. Widely used for wellness, recovery, and performance applications. More accessible for home or clinic use, with a lower barrier to entry.
The right chamber type depends on your intended use. We help clients understand the differences and connect them with the right suppliers or facilities. The clinical suitability of any approach is a matter for qualified practitioners.
